What is The Sealed Knot?

The Sealed Knot, a registered charity, was formed in 1968 and is the largest group of its type in Europe. The aim of The Sealed Knot Society is to increase the knowledge and awareness of the period of history around the time of the British Civil Wars of 1638 to 1651, through re-enacting battles, sieges and skirmishes, and through living history events depicting life in the seventeenth century. The Sealed Knot is comprised of both Royalist and Parliamentarian troops. It is run on the lines of 17th century armies and members are organised into regiments largely on a geographical basis.

Who were Manus O’Cahans Regiment of Foot?

Manus O’Cahans Regiment of Foot was originally raised in Ireland for the earl of Antrim in 1644 to fight for the Royalist cause. The regiment was composed of veteran Irish and Scottish troops who fought under the leadership of the Marquis of Montrose during his campaigns in Scotland. The regiment helped gain many notable victories over the Scottish covenanting forces before finally being defeated by David Leslie’s forces in 1645 at Philliphaugh in the Borders.

What do we do?

Manus O’Cahans takes part in, and organises, events all over the British Isles and Europe, from battles and skirmishes to living history displays and talks. During the winter months we have training events and banquets, and many of the members meet socially on a regular basis all year round. We also have a regular regimental newsletter, and The Sealed Knot has a full colour bi-monthly magazine.

What do we wear?

The regiment wears a uniform based on clothing of the period, with a green soldiers coat and russet brown britches. The ladies in the regiment also have the opportunity to wear period style dresses. Most of the clothing and equipment worn is made by the members themselves, or purchased from the numerous suppliers available. The regiment is willing to lend clothing to new members to get them started.
